Until Wi-Fi 6E expands into Canada, Wi-Fi 6 is the latest generation of Wi-Fi. When it first hit the scene, Wi-Fi 6 impressed the public by being able to host a range of devices simultaneously on the same router network.

This new MU-MIMO technology means that you can enjoy faster response times.
• Target Wake Time: Smart devices previously attempted to connect to your Wi-Fi network continually. This can clog your bandwidth and lower response times. Now, with Wi-Fi 6, there is Target Wake Time, which allows your smart devices to connect to your Wi-Fi network at scheduled times. This allows for better energy consumption and a less clogged network.

However, with all of Wi-Fi 6's improved functionalities, it is important to remember the capacity limitations of your internet service provider (ISP). Although Wi-Fi 6 allows for a massive boost in data transfer speeds, your personal internet plan might cap data transmission performance at specific levels.

When Will Wi-Fi 6E Be Available in Canada?

Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) announced that it opened up the new Wi-Fi spectrum in the 6GHz frequency range on May 19th, 2021. However,  Canada is still working out the regulations to get them in the hands of everyday people. 

That’s because ISED is regulating the rollout of Wi-Fi 6E compatible outdoor devices since they may be capable of interrupting the service frequencies of fixed satellite services. Thus, they are all required to implement automatic frequency coordination.

Although specific frequencies differ, many other countries have opened up their Wi-Fi capacities into the 6GHz range so Canada should be well on its way. These countries include the United States, as well as several countries in South America, Europe, and Asia.

The ISED have divided Wi-Fi 6E compatible devices into three power categories:

• Standard power devices that function as both indoor and outdoor access points for large groups of people to use the internet. These devices have automated frequency coordination (AFC) control.
• Low power indoor-only devices that do not possess the capacity for AFC control, such as home routers.
• Very low power devices without AFC control, such as internet of things sensing applications.

As for when we'll see Wi-Fi 6E compatible devices on the Canadian market, that is uncertain. Some predictions suggest that we will have them by mid to late 2022.

Will My Current Wi-Fi System Support Wi-Fi 6E?

Ultimately, this will vary from system to system. It is almost impossible to say whether or not each specific router will be compatible with the new spectrum of Wi-Fi 6E. However, routers below Wi-Fi 6 such as Wi-Fi 5 routers (also known as 802.11ac routers) will most likely not be compatible with the new spectrum of Wi-Fi 6E.

Current routers Wi-Fi 6 routers should be able to use the newly approved frequency. However, because it is new, expect your router to require firmware updates.
